During the renovation of our kitchen I undertook to source beautiful, hand crafted  ceramic tiles that reflected the style and nature of our home. It was not an easy task! I was absolutely thrilled to discover Southern Art Ceramic Design. Going to the workshop and meeting Gerrit was an inspiring and enlightening experience. I could have spent hours there. Although my project to tile the splashback of my hob was a very small one, I was so impressed with the genuine attention and excellent service I got. "Hi Gerrit,

What a battle to get the photos right, something went wrong with the program. I’ve managed to save it in a Word format. If you can’t use them, please let me know then I’ll try and reload the camera program. As you can see the pictures were taken in December already, just after they finished the kitchen.

What a search to get quality, startling and affordable “backsplash” tiles for a kitchen. After months and months of paging through kitchen and other interior decorating books and visits to tile shops, we decided to make a call to Slavin & Company and ask them if they could help us. They’ve given us the web info of someone who passed away some time ago but this led us to your website for the obvious reason – you had the solution.

What a pleasure it has been doing business with you – giving us the right advise, not pushing us into any direction, answering my e-mails very, very late at night, sending off parcels without any delay, bending backwards with your timing and your willingness to negotiate on the price.

It was such a pleasant and challenging exercise to build our own pattern – with each commissioning I guess you say that this is the best we’ve done – but ours must be the best ever!!! We get so many compliments that you should start paying advertising fees - to us.

I can keep on saying good and nice things about our end product and about Southern Art Ceramics Design – but my wife said I should not “gush” to much. Just a bit of advise to those who are busy renovating or building – do not waste time in searching for quality handmade tiles elsewhere – do yourself the favour and get the best from  Southern Art Ceramics Design.

Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply. But the tiles were only placed last thursday! We had a long wait for the gentleman who put them in to come. 

Next week they will put in the rubberry silicone "filler" around the very outer edge and finally the kitchen will be done! 

I will wait until then to send pictures.  Here however I note my feedback. 

We are so pleased with the exceptional work done by Southern Art Ceramic Design. From the beginning to the end Gerrit took us step by step along a professional path that has lead us to having a unique spotlight in our kitchen. 
We have received so many compliments, from friends and even from the workers in our house, claiming they had not seen anything like it. 

The shipping and the packing was easy and excellent. Each piece was protected by a piece of styrofoam, none were broken and we even received the tiles right at our doorstep. 

We appreciated the professional advice on colors and styles. What a wonderful way to get the look you really want. We simply sent in a picture and shortly afterwards we received suggestions for colour and font.

We are thrilled with our herb tile panel, it has enhanced our new kitchen considerably and the entire process went very smoothly. The service that you and Gillian provided was top class, and I must thank you both  for all that you did for us. We needed to get our panel up to Johannesburg urgently, and you did this well within the expected time period (we didn’t pay the premium price for quicker delivery).

The panel looks great, and we have had many compliments made about how lovely it looks. The tiles were installed by our kitchen architect and builder (Rade Jovic 0824125828) and his men and it all happened very quickly.

I am sorry you beat me to it, as I had every intention of telling you the tiles are eventually up!  This only happened on Friday, so very few people have seen them, but both David and I and the lady who is painting the kitchen for us are delighted and they look as good, if not better, than the photographs you sent us by e.mail.

David and I so enjoyed meeting you at the factory in Hermanus and seeing all the beautiful tiles you create. Although we had an idea what we wanted it was only with your expertise that it all came together.

Although we collected the tiles from you some weeks ago in Cape Town, I only unpacked them and laid them out last week, as I was apprehensive that they might get broken.  None were broken because of your excellent packing, so now our lovely plaque is up on the wall above the hob.

As soon as the kitchen is complete I will take a photograph and send it to you.

Thanks for the contact. I'm afraid that there were few design-orientated
people involved in our cottage as I pretty well did it all myself! However,
Margie Walsh, our architect, knows of your company and she was pleased when
she saw the tiles we'd chosen. The company who made our kitchen cupboards
also admired them. As we've not yet finished the cottage - but hope to in
the next fortnight - friends haven't been coming to see it. But I'm certain
that when they do, they, too, will love the tiles. Everything looks superb
and is just how we'd imagined they would look. They create features without
being ostentatious. And you and your team got the colour perfect! Craig and
I are thrilled with the result.

I also very much enjoyed working with you and your team. Everything was
dealt with very professionally and things went exactly according to plan.
This was especially gratifying because almost everything that could went
wrong during our renovation. (Hence the very lengthy period of building!)
You all responded quickly to my ideas and I was always confident that the
tiling would be successful. I especially appreciated the "extra" plain tiles
that arrived with our order. As it happened I had had to make a last-minute
alteration to the granite splashbacks on either side of the hob. And the
extractor fan unit had been set slightly higher than we'd expected. So we
needed some extra tiles to cut in half to create an additional row. All went
well with only two breakages!

You are welcome to use any of my remarks in your advertising if you think
they will be of any use. But please do not use my name.

I'm sorry that we've been unable to meet you at the cottage when you've
wanted to take photographs. We'll be happy to oblige but do not live there
yet. Please let us know several days in advance when you're likely to be
coming through Somerset West and we'll try to meet you there. I'm hoping
that by tomorrow (Friday) I can close the door on a completed project!

The photographs you took are beautiful! Can’t quite believe it is our kitchen! Garden and Home phoned to ask if they could photograph it too and Di is due to come next week! So it is being much admired.

Our experience both with Twines Tiles and with Southern Art (both yourself and Gillian) was a real pleasure. Your advice was sound and the work was completed well within our time frame. When we realized we had under-estimated the amount of tiles needed (cause of a design change) a lot of time and effort was spent matching the previous tiles and now you can barely tell the difference – in fact the slight change makes it look more individual and original.

Our kitchen was designed by Nicolwood, manufactured by the cabinetmaker, Peter Christie-Smith (Tel: 082-9385265) and the tiler is employed by our builder, Pete Matthiae (021-7617238).
